Idaho Velodrome Fundraiser Cyclocross Race - Dec. 6
I just got off the phone with USA Cycling and they agreed to allow this event to go under the Sandy Point Series Permit this year so we will not have any additional permit fees (by the way, Linda at USA Cycling is great!). I am starting a new topic thread and at the bottom of this is Ron's original email after his discussion with Douglas Tobin. This will be a great community event. We will need folks to volunteer to help set-up course, etc. More information will come out once we stop running around like chickens :) Go to www.brokenspokecycling.org for final info. (as well as on this forum.) And, Mike K. is going to forgo retirement for one extra month, just for this! Proposed info (any input will be welcomed): Saturday Race December 6th Registration: minimum $20 (and we will also take donations of any amount) all net proceeds are donated to the velodrome (net means gross receipts minus course marking material cost, etc. and the normal $2 USA cycling insurance per rider) Once we get a hold of Douglas and start working with the City of Eagle we will be able to finalize info. I can't really plan anything specific without the official OK from the Velodrome or Eagle... Please stay tuned and keep your fingers crossed.... Jody P.S. Ron must wear Hal's Elf Booties to race! _______________________________________ Ron Miller's Last Forum Post: I spoke with Douglas Tobin last night (11/5/08) and he stated that a race could take place. There are several things that will need happen: 1) We need to figure who is putting on the race. 2) That person or group should then get together with Douglas and work out some of the race details. 3) A permit will need to be filed with the City of Eagle and Douglas knows the mechanics of that process. Also, like Kurt said, a USAC permit is not needed. 4) Determine a course. The course could use the grass near the skate park, the parking lots and the paved bike path. It could also use some of the dirt depending on weather. If we have enough people willing to work to make it happen, it will happen. I can help in any way needed. RDM

Sounds fun...
I'm still working out my schedule, but if I'm in Boise I'd help out in any way needed.
Good vs. Evil
Glad to se that this forum can be used for good, not just by the forces of evil! :>)
Now that is funny :)
But evil usually wins..
So you can teach old dogs new tricks. I would never have guessed that adding a new race in a new town at a new venue would have been that simple using USACycling.

USA Cycling
Linda Buffetti at USA Cycling is an absolute pleasure to work with...I encourage all of the race promoters to thank her for her help on this one (and all of Broken Spoke Cycling events because she always lends us a hand)

P.S. it's not what you know but who you know
Rock on

I am pretty sure I will be here that weekend so I will help out as well. Linda is a great rep, she has always been very helpful, nice and friendly. Let me know what you would like me to do.
I can help too
I just live up the street and would be happy to help set up, tear down, whatever. Send me a note or give me a call. Brad Turpen

count me and maybe Sid in! we live about a mile away and would be more than happy to help out anyway we can.
IVCP Cross course idea
This is probably too ambitious, but long term, it would be cool to see a "fly-over" at the IVCP cross course. I've seen video and pictures (check out the Velonews.com shots of last weekend's Mercer Cup). I think with all of us, we could build something or maybe even use a giant water pipe with dirt terrace stairs up one side and dirt slope down the other - then ride through the underside later in the course. It seems it would also make it easier to use the small space at IVCP if you could create a figure 8 course. My two cents.
You have such great ideas!
This and the Tuesday nighter format idea you had are good stuff.
Keep up the good work!

Velodrome Fundraiser a go! December 6th
We have the approval from USA Cycling, City of Eagle, and the Velodrome folks (Dave Beck and Douglas Tobin)!!!
I know this is on the same weekend as the USGP of Cyclocross in Portland, so please don't feel guilty about representing Idaho in Portland... we all wish you well and make us proud. However, for those staying we are requesting a great turn-out. We will be needing a lot of help, course set-up, tear-down, and scorers for the races.
The City of Eagle was extremely accommodating and we have not only all the velopark area, but also all the city park. We were out there with Dave Beck and Mike from Eagle and looked at the available area and I think we can put up one great course. Lots of grass, stairs, dirt, road... you name it.
After Eagle Island this weekend, we will put out a schedule for volunteers. I will also make a flyer to advertise by Monday. It should be up on www.brokenspokecycling.org by Monday as well and I will send it to Brad S. to put on the SICS site.
We are thinking of a 12:00 first race start and probably only 2 races (don't worry details will come out later, and in plenty of time to plan). Probably at least $20 for registration but donations will also be accepted. So everyone knows our costs will be:
1) $2/rider to USAC for insurance
2) ~$100 for Portapotty (City of Eagle has closed the restrooms at the park indefinitely because of vandalism)
3) ~$50 for tape and other extraneous crap. (maybe not but just so folks have an idea)
4) the rest of the raised money goes to the Velodrome.
5) and the rest of the stuff has been donated or purchased by Physio (Thank Dave F.)/CadioVascular (thank Andy), and left over stuff from the SWICA races at Sandy Point and Eagle Island.
If anyone has contacts to give us great media exposure feel free to get them the flyer. So far things are going very quickly and working out. This started as a cyclist movement for a race, it is happening, lets keep the momentum! This is our community cycle park so what better way to help out!
Thanks
Jody
Great news!!! Thanks to all
Great news!!! Thanks to all the people who have put in work already for this race, now its time for all the rest of us to step up and help out any way we can!
Volunteer needs for Velodrome fundraiser
Here is the preliminary information and I will just edit this message with final thoughts later (flyer to come out on Monday or Tuesday). I have to apologize to everyone but I have meetings all that week and I think Sat. morning, so I might not be able to help setup course/regs/etc. Ron Miller has graciously volunteered to organize the volunteers and make sure stuff is accomplished. Physio is a great supporter of our events.
Course marking: Hal Miller and Alex Phipps will lay out the course on Friday afternoon (exact time to be determined). However, after talking to the park manager about the vandalism we might not want to leave our course equipment out there, our sponsors spent a lot of money on us and we don't want kids ruining it. I know Ron M. can show up late afternoon to see how the course was laid out and the intent (suggestions are always welcome, so please post on the forum if you are interested in helping out on Friday afternoon).
Course set-up: starting at 8:00 am Sat. morning, Ron and others will put up the course. It takes Mike K., Hal, Alex, and me about 6 hours to do Sandy Point. So, if we mark the course on Fri. afternoon (which takes the longest), a group of folks can put in stakes and tape it in a couple hours.
Registration: we need two people to do registration. I will make sure Ron has the forms. Keep your fingers crossed my meetings fall through and then I can be there and help.
Scorers: everyone likes results, even for a fund raiser. We need two people scoring and one person yelling numbers to make it most efficient for each race. We can post results fairly quickly so you can brag :)
Racing: please get people out. This is for our cycle park so lets try and break the 100 racer mark! Remember goals are good! Plus, I will be working with local media and outdoor/bicycle stores to get this out to the community for spectators.
Tear down: please stick around and help us put it all away. We are working on a few local restaurants to donate food for after the race, but if that falls through lets have a BBQ and BYOB (I will know by next week). The City of Eagle folks said it was fine to do both as long as it was donations or free!
Please post to the forum on what and who is interested in what. Ron will make it happen. Thanks to all and lets get out to support our cycle park. We will be able to develop this area into a great cx race course for the coming years. Pray for snow!

cycling park race
Hi.
I notice on the Broken Spoke site that the race times listed are for the Sandy Point races. We need to post the race times for the cycling park race.

Who exactly is in charge of
Who exactly is in charge of this thing? Meaning, organizing course set up, take down, timing, decision making etc... It sounds like there are plenty of volunteers to complete all the required parts quickly, but nobody is the leader of this cult...
In charge
Course Layout Friday: Alex Phipps, Hal Miller, Mike Kennedy and anyone who would like to join in.
Permits: Broken Spoke Cycling
Monies/Supplies: Broken Spoke Cycling
Course Setup: With the major problem in vandalism we are not willing to let our course stakes sit over night so Ron Miller is organizing the volunteers to set up the course Saturday morning.
Registration: One Broken Spoke member and at least two volunteers
Volunteers: All willing to help out should contact Ron Miller
Teardown: One Broken Spoke (Alex Phipps) and hopefully a whole bunch of folks to help out

I will be at the park at 8am with the GOODS to set the course. I hope to see a few of you there to put this course up, the more the merrier, Right??
The course will rock, you will have fun...
Other details...I have no change..Again I have no change...bring checks or bring the exact amount you want to donate to the cause!
I also don't have safety pins for the numbers, I have numbers no pins...Yes I do have time to go get pins and maybe I should, but I'm not going to do it...Call your friends and let them know to bring their own pins or glue, that might work? Spray glue.....
Ohh ya, last thing..Bring your license or pay the extra day license fee! This is the last race of the yr, no excuse this is most likely not your first race so you Do Know the Drillllllllllll...!!!!
Well Stated
Alex,
That is probably the best post I have read this year! As far as safety pins go, is that what you are suppose to use? Real crossers use thumbtacks. Better yet, those pneumatic staple guns work just fine, too.
See you in the AM.

THANKS!
Great race today even if I came in last place. Racing on the velodrome track was awesome. Can everyone that participated officially claim the "first race" on the track? Thanks to everyone that made it happen!
I want more...
A great first year. Are there any more races around the West?
Thank you for the Velo race, I could see a 3 race series out there.
A cool place to ride.
More Races
Doug,
You can go to Kansas City and race Nationals. Then jump a flight to Europe and give the Worlds a try. Let me know how it goes. As for me, I'm done. It was a great year, lot's of fun. I'll stop one race short of getting hurt!
Grandpa G.
Europe, Here I come. Ha!
Thank you for the info. It's back to the Road bike since we have no snow.
Thank you to everyone who put on, sponsored, helped at or had anything to do with the races.
I had a good time and will be back next year for more.
Doug
Mountain Bike
Doug,
Now is a great time to work on the road bike AND the mountain bike. If you're interested, several of us do some mtn. bike rides once or twice a week. I found it helped my bike skills tremendously this year. Besides, it takes the sting out of those windy, cold road rides we so love this time of year.
Give me a call.
